Ecuador straddles the equator from which it takes it's name, and has an area of 98,985 miles. It's capital city is Quito. Ecuador's population is ethnically diverse. The largest ethnic group is comprized of Mesitizes, the mixed decendants of Spanish colonists and indigenous Native Americans, who constitute 65% of the population. In addition to the Spanish language, Kichwa and the Amerindian languages are spoken by indigenous communities.
